On the day of their first encounter, Kane is celebrating his appointment to the family bank and Abel the managership of a Chicago hotel. Abel blames Kane for the suicide of his partner and mentor Davis LeRoy and swears revenge. A mysterious benefactor helps him to recover from financial ruin and begin his rise to wealth and power. Davis Osbourne, Kane's despised stepfather, insinuates himself into Abel's life, a key pawn in the battle between the two men. Charles Lester bequeaths the chairmanship of Lester Bank to surrogate son Kane, now poised to realise his lifelong dream of merging the two banks. But opposition is fierce. Meanwhile Abel's success costs him his marriage. In his determination to merge the Kane-Cabot and Lester banks, Kane unwittingly lays himself open to Abel's plan for revenge. Facing the loss of his empire, Kane acquires David Osbourne's diary, using its damning record to bring a federal indictment against Abel and robbing him of a promised ambassadorship to Poland. His hatred further fuelled, Abel manoeuvres Kane's resignation form the bank.
